It looks like the rumors are somewhat true. After weeks of teasing, NetherReam has confirmed that the next Mortal Kombat game will be titled Mortal Kombat 1, but rather than a remake of the original game, we have a timeline that starts back at zero with Liu Kang assuming the role of the Elder God that’s usually occupied by Raiden.

It’s In Our Blood. Discover a reborn Mortal Kombat Universe created by Fire God Liu Kang. Mortal Kombat 1 ushers in a new era of the iconic franchise with a new fighting system, game modes, and Fatalities!

Oddly enough, the trailer starts out pretty tranquil, but since this is Mortal Kombat, we should expect some kung fu violence, and that’s what we got in the clip of Shang Tsung just going through all the characters. I don’t expect the fatalities to be that cinematic, but it’s a good reminder of what to expect with a franchise like MK.

So far, confirmed characters in the roster based on the announcement include Liu Kang, Kung Lao, a mortal Raiden, Kitana, Mileena, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero; Shang Tsung is confirmed to be a pre-order bonus. No MK game is complete without Jax, Sonya, and Johnny Cage, so hopefully they get announced soon. Despite all these classic characters though, it would also be nice to see some new faces join the fold.

Mortal Kombat 1 is now available for pre-order with beta access available by August. The game officially launches on Sept. 19.
